SNG & Partners Announces Seventh Edition Of ‘The Banking Law: In Theory And Practice’

The Indian full-service law firm, SNG & Partners has announced the release of the Seventh Edition of the authoritative three volume treatise titled “The Banking Law: In Theory and Practice,” published by LexisNexis – Universal. The updated edition continues the rich legacy of late Shri S.N. Gupta, one of India’s pioneering scholars on banking law, whose foundational work has guided generations of legal and financial professionals. Revised, expanded, and updated by Rajesh Narain Gupta (Founder & Chairman, SNG & Partners) and Amit Aggarwal (Managing Partner – Corporate & Non-Contentious Practice, SNG & Partners), this edition represents a significant milestone in the evolution of this classic text. The publication offers a comprehensive examination of India’s banking laws, regulatory framework, judicial precedents, and contemporary financial practices, serving as an indispensable reference for lawyers, bankers, academicians, researchers, regulators, and policymakers. Speaking on the release, Rajesh Narain Gupta reflected on the enduring relevance of the text and the rapidly changing financial landscape.

“The book has been a foundational reference for professionals in the financial and legal sectors for several decades. Through this new edition, we have aimed to ensure that the book reflects the dynamic realities of the Indian and global banking ecosystem. It integrates recent legal, regulatory, and technological developments, while maintaining the original intent of the work, to serve as a practical and authoritative reference for anyone engaged in banking law and practice. In the last two decades, the way of doing banking has undergone a disruptive change, and with the arrival of new forms of financial institutions such as NBFCs, AIFs and to some extent mutual funds, the ability to raise funds by the borrowers and the manner in which they are raised has significantly evolved. Working on this book every edition is almost a ritual I thoroughly enjoy as it enables the entire team to condense our learnings and experiences into an academic text that will benefit many and not just a few.”

Amit Aggarwal further highlighted the shifts brought by technology, digital finance, and new regulatory developments.

“The banking industry today operates at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation. In revising this edition, we sought to incorporate these dimensions and make the text relevant to both the traditional bankers and the modern financial professionals. With each edition, we are entrusted with the responsibility to produce a text that is aligned with every facet of the evolution of banking and finance laws, including cutting-edge digital and tech-driven trends. Significant modifications have been incorporated not only by the way of judicial pronouncements but also in aspects of new forms of fundraising, digital lending mechanisms, and new age frauds and safeguards around it are covered in the book. This revision also covers the latest aspects relating to IBC, fintechrelated issues pertaining to datasharing, payment platforms, and ebanking etc. It is our hope that this work will continue to be an indispensable guide for practitioners and academicians alike.”

The authors acknowledged the contributions of their colleagues Devyani Dhawan, Pankaj Bajpai, and Bhavya Chopra, whose research support was instrumental in shaping this extensive revision.

With its comprehensive updates, rigorous legal analysis, and forward-looking approach, the Seventh Edition of The Banking Law: In Theory and Practice reinforces its position as a definitive resource for understanding India’s dynamic financial ecosystem. The publication stands as a testament to SNG & Partners’ continued commitment to strengthening legal scholarship in banking and finance and supporting professionals navigating an increasingly complex regulatory landscape.
